The objective of the bioeconomy is a biobased, sustainable economy oriented towards natural material cycles. BioBall aims to accelerate the transition into a bioeconomy under the specific conditions of the industrialized and densely populated metropolitan region of Frankfurt Rhine-Main. The Innovation Space primarily promotes the material recycling of biogenic residual and waste materials. The program intensifies the direct exchange between private and municipal business, science, and politics - initiates new project ideas and funds innovative research and development projects in order to establish a bio-based economy. This not only helps to close raw material cycles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to leverage untapped economic potential.

The SusBev - Sustainable Beverages - projectaims to utilize agricultural residues and side streams from viticulture and other regional agricultural processes and turn them into healthy and tasty beverages and foods with the help of fermentative processes.

Our guest is Dr. Enrico Barsch, Head of Bioeconomy at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Mr. Barsch is originally a chemist and is particularly concerned with the industrial bioeconomy in the department and is therefore responsible for the BioBall innovation area and the three other innovation areas.
In the interview, Mr. Barsch explains what an elementary building block the bioeconomy is for the transformation towards climate neutrality and how it acts as an important signal for the economic future. The two sides of the bioeconomy coin are considered: On the one hand, the use of biological knowledge for new technologies and innovations and, on the other, the biogenic feedstock. The challenges posed by the limited raw material biomass and the need for recycled carbon are also discussed here.
Mr. Barsch explains why the bioeconomy can only be advanced together and why society should be directly involved in order to drive forward a sustainable bioeconomy.

Flood of plastic in hospitals. Plastics have become indispensable, especially in the medical sector, due to their versatility, formability and low cost. However, there is no efficient cycle for these materials. The lack of sustainable plastics is identified as a critical gap that BIOVOX is consistently closing with medical grade bioplastics, among other things. We welcome Carmen Rommel, a member of the BIOVOX founding team, on this topic. As part of Bioball, BIOVOX has been implementing the PHA4Pack research project since the beginning of the year.
