The project

Glycans represent a previously underestimated class of substances for material use. They can primarily be obtained from carbohydrate-rich or lignocellulosic material streams through extraction.



The major challenge is the cost efficiency and resource requirements of the technologies available to date. On the one hand, this relates to extraction and purification for production, and on the other hand to further processing, as chemical modifications are required for material use.



The project is developing glycan-based binders for packaging materials. The size of the glycans is of decisive importance for this - three different processes are being compared. Ultrafiltration and industrial functionalization processes for polysaccharides are being adapted for processing. The application test is carried out in proven formulations of paints and varnishes.
