AbZuMeOH
The aim of the project Waste to Methanol (AbZuMeOH) is to explore the potential of utilizing CO2 generated from the combustion of (biogenic) waste and the production of burnt lime for methanol synthesis.

The project
Decentral CO2 generated from various exhaust streams must be isolated and purified to the required standard for catalytic methanol synthesis. The hydrogen necessary for methanol production can be provided through water electrolysis, with the required electricity being partially generated from the thermal treatment of biogenic waste and supplemented by power from renewable energy sources (green hydrogen).
The oxygen produced as a by-product can be utilized beneficially in thermal waste treatment or lime production, or, depending on the location, made available to other consumers. The goal is to refine the methanol to meet the global IMPCA specification, which allows its use in the fuel sector and within the chemical industry (e.g., for the production of durable goods such as plastics).
bse Methanol GmbH coordinates the consortium, analyzes the normative environment, designs the process, and simulates it for the selected sites. Provadis Hochschule handles process and sustainability analysis as well as the economic evaluation of the overall project. Infraserv GmbH & Co. Höchst KG and Schaefer Kalk GmbH & Co. KG support these activities by providing site-specific data, exploring the integration of methanol synthesis at their locations, and developing a marketing concept.
